Raleigh House started out as a small hotel. Between 1986
and 1993 it was used as a homeless person’s unit by
various Local Authorities. Increasingly, the people placed
were younger and younger.
Harry Angelides founded Raleigh Care Ltd, October 1993;
after he noted that the young people required considerably
more than the pure accommodation that was being provided
for at the time. There was a strong need for care and commitment.
He set up Raleigh Care to provide the care and commitment
that these young people needed to move on in their lives
and create a positive future.
Initially, there was the process of getting registered;
being the only private home within the borough posed certain
difficulties; building works, planning consent, other regulations
provided other constraints, people of a lesser resolve would
have given up at this stage. Mr Angelides persisted, however,
and in October 1993 Raleigh House opened as the first registered
home within the London Borough of Camden. At this time it
was registered for 11 young people as a home providing preparation
for independence. It
was
some 2 months before the first admission. This was a young
man on 24 hours curfew due to violent crime and sexualised
behaviour. He displayed moderate to extreme challenging
behaviour. Raleigh did an excellent job looking after him
and was commended by the Local Authority involved. Raleigh
House developed the concept of special packages from this
initial placement.
For a number of years Raleigh House ran successfully as
a unit providing preparation and training for independence
and providing special packages for young adults displaying
at risk behaviour. Gradually, it was apparent that many
of the young people placed had more deep seated problems
that needed to be addressed before they could attempt to
grapple with the issues of inter-dependent living within
the community. At first Falkland House was opened as a move
on unit so that those young people working at moving onto
independent living were not distracted by those still struggling
with deep seated issues.
Gradually Raleigh switched focus to become a unit for difficult,
hard to place young people with complex problems and Falkland
became an intensive unit for young people requiring intensive
support and high staffing levels.
Over time the special service became the norm and a dedicated
and experienced staff team committed to their work, has
built up and created the Raleigh Care ethos that allows
us to successfully grapple with the difficult issues presented
by the young people.
